Cellular Mobile Communication
Cellular Mobile Communication to which almost every individual in present generation is addicted, may it be voice calls, Internet or SMS. Having a basic idea of how this communication takes place is really amazing and interesting, lets know …
The communication through cellular mobile phone is done through base stations (i.e. mobile towers) that cover a particular area known as cell thus, giving the term Cellular Mobile Communication. When these base stations are connected to cover a big land mass a Cellular Network is created.
The Communication Process :
Whenever we make a call, the following process takes place –
How listening and speaking is possible at the same time ??
Unlike, One-way wireless phones where the user speaks then says OVER so that the person at other end can speak.
The Cellular devices use two different frequencies each at both ends for receiving and transmitting at the same time thus making a two way communication, in technical words it is referred as full duplex communication.
What if Cellular device is moving ?
When the cellular device is moving, the MSC automatically keeps track of relative signal monitoring readings from the base stations near the cellular device and switches the device’s service to the nearest base station, in technical terms this is called hand off or hand over.
Additionally, MSC is responsible for connecting all devices in an area to a central office which connects to other MSCs for long distance communication.
How the call goes to exactly the same person you require to talk with ?
A Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) is used to provide unique identification to each cellular device. Whenever, you dial a number the call is accurately connected to the person you require through SIM.
Frequency reuse a major advantage of Cellular Communication !
A major advantage of cellular communication is frequency reuse i.e. same frequency can be repeatedly used for communication from base station to cellular devices after several base stations(cells) without causing interference. Frequency reuse utilizes the maximum of available frequency with efficient communication. As an example,
In each cell having the same number mark, same frequency can be used efficiently without interference.
Cellular Mobile Communication has grown enormously in last few years with some great advents and amazing features in cellular devices like Google Assistant, GPS tracking, video calling, etc.
Initially, cellular mobile communication was meant only for voice but today it is used for transferring data packets, texts, etc. we can expect much more in the days to come !

Whenever we make a call, the following process takes place –
- Information from your cellular device is sent to the nearest base station through radio waves, the base station is connected to a Mobile Switching Centre (MSC).
- Now, the MSC looks and connects to the cell where the required cellular device is.
- Then this base station connects to the required cellular device.
