Gravity Light : A Gravity powered Lamp

There have been increasing efforts to develop methods of electricity that are environment-friendly, efficient and renewable like solar energy, wind energy, hydroelectricity, etc.

Lets know about a similar device that uses Gravity to produce light named Gravity Light.

What is a Gravity Light?

It is gravity-powered lamp designed by the company Deciwatt for use in developing nations as a replacement for kerosene lamps.
It requires ZERO operating cost after the initial purchase of the appliance.
Gravity lamp can deliver light by up to 30 minutes.

How it works?

Gravity light is installed at a height of 6ft/1.8m. A weight of about 12kg is lifted to device's base through a cord attached to the device and on release, the weight starts falling very slowly (about 1mm/sec).
This movement powers a drive sprocket, which rotates very slowly with high torque. A polymer gear train turns this input into a high speed, low torque output that drives a DC generator at thousands of rotations per minute.
This generates under a tenth of a watt, a deciwatt, to power an LED and other low power devices for about 25 minutes.Once the weighted bag reaches the floor, it is simply lifted again.

However, the energy generated by such device is low. But in future, we may expect some great advancements as gravity is the most easily, widely and 24x7 available energy resource.
